Customizable Tip Amount on Payouts
John Dieter
When tipping at the campaign level on a payout, instead of having pre-selected choices (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%), give the option to edit the percent.

This was an issue for us this year. For our 2025 campaign, donors could easily see the place to opt-in and the amount. This year many donors didn't catch the small print where they needed to click "other" and choose $0 to "opt-out." We also received complaints the default was 15%.

Defaulting to 15% is way too much and is making us reconsider GiveButter entirely. We need to be able to set the default amount, or it needs to be easier to uncheck the tips; it requires way too much on the donor's side - way too much intentional "friction" to make it harder for the donor to take the tip off. This needs to be changed. I get that they operate through the tips, but we're already paying for the plus account with is almost $400 a month. So the platform isn't even "free" for us. and 15% is an obscene amount, especially when we have donors that are donating a lot larger amounts.

Selya Stice I agree that especially for Plus accounts, there should be different user interface that streamlines opting out if our donors choose to. Even if that only looks like a smaller platform fee (on the nonprofit) for campaigns where we choose to turn off tipping.

I know that donors can manually select "other," but defaulting to 15% doesn't feel good. We've had folks call and complain. We want to provide a superior donor experience and are fine with offering the option to cover "fees," but 15% as the default feels like you are taking advantage of people and is disappointing.

We agree! We REALLY would like the ability to customize (
LOWER
) the default tip option. 15% is too large.F

Our donors are also complaining about the large 15% default tip option, as some of them miss it. I agree that it should be an option to opt in or set the default tip to a lower amount. There are too many clicks for a donor to go through the process of removing a tip, which is cumbersome and a turn-off.

Faridha Barra I agree. I understand they operate off tips, which is why putting a 0% option feels like a compromise that doesn't require the donor to first change the percent to other then click all the way down to $0- at that point it feels intentionally difficult which then falls on the nonprofit to fix that broken trust.

Our donors also expressed that they were upset by the tip question. For a platform that does a lot of work to streamline the donor experience, this seems like an enormous misstep. Setting the default tip to 15% is horrible, we just disabled it for our newest campaign. It is especially insulting for people considering large donations.

I agree with these comments. The tipping option is confusing. It's not common and easily misunderstood. Some donors appear to be angry that the "fees" are so high. Others suggested we change our platform. It needs better explanation and an easier way to navigate so we don't turn away donors.

We agree with an option to edit the percentage on a payout

The tipping option should be clearer with maybe a Y or N option that would then bring up a percentage or amount. I had some who was also giving a large amount complain about the fees on GB because she didn't understand the tip option. It's not a common feature on other giving websites, so it's easily misunderstood. I had another donor get frustrated because of the fees and instead mailed a check. Giving should be an easy transaction for our donors, however, the tipping is confusing and an obstacle. I wonder how many choose NOT to give because of the misunderstanding and the fees involved.

We had someone make a large donation to us and she didn't notice the tip option, because honestly is does not stand out, and she called screaming at us because the tip amount was like 12 or 15%
